Celebrating SPARK Awards 2017 Nominees: Part 3

Over the last couple of weeks we’ve been sharing some of the pubic nominations that were submitted for our cityCURRENT and WKNO televised awards show, The SPARK Awards. These are all current nominees for the show, which honors organizations and individuals who are making a difference in the Mid-South; and we’re sharing their stories as a way to inspire each of us with the GOOD taking place here in our city.   

Hollywood Feed offers natural and holistic pet food and products, and supports local rescues through regular pet adoption and community events. The Memphis-based brand serves customers in more than 55 stores across the Southeast in Tennessee, Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, and Texas…Hollywood Feed donates an estimated 50 tons of pet food to shelters and pet rescues each year. For example, through its "You Buy, We Give" program, Hollywood Feed recently raised more than $200,000 in products including nearly 90,000 pounds of food - enough to feed 480 dogs for a year…To help shelter animals more easily transition into adoptable pets, Hollywood Feed also donates items such as food, flea and tick prevention, pet shampoo, identification tags, beds, calming aids, chew toys and more…Collectively, the Hollywood Feed "pack" of employees have about 1,200 pets - most of them from area rescues. As such, the team is very active in volunteering and supporting local rescue efforts. Each store gets to choose the rescues it supports through dog washes, adoption events, fundraisers and more…”

“Through the Let's Innovate through Education program (LITE), Halima Morafa launched a program called Art Revival where she helped low-income middle school students learn how to use art to express their frustrations. The program has a total of 29 students in the program and 35 students attend the workshops. They have raised $1,200 dollars for the project. For Halima's senior project, she is making a runway event to raise awareness for domestic violence and underrepresented youth in Memphis. The runway will include an expressive clothing collection that represents the stages one takes towards self-acceptance, self-love, and tolerance…After the runway, a silent auction will take place featuring looks from the collections. All proceeds from the event will go towards a local domestic violence center…Halima is also a part of Key Club where she has volunteered for over 100 hours in the past 2 years. She is also a part of Memphis Challenge where she has designed a film that will premiere at the Indie Memphis Youth Arts Festival about regaining one's identity.”

Mallori King’s platform is Child literacy. She is the founder of M (for Mallori) and M (for Maleah, her deceased sister) Cares which collects and donates books for children in the community. Mallori has turned her love for reading into a passion to help others. She volunteers in the Read Across America program by reading, speaking to and tutoring elementary school students. She is an active volunteer in the Memphis community…”
