24/7 Lifeline to Hope

24/7 Lifeline to Hope

Last week we highlighted The Exchange Club Family Center.  This week let us spotlight the Memphis Crisis Center, an agency that provides a 24 hour volunteer-powered hotline service that offers help, builds hope, and saves lives every day.

Founded in 1970, the Memphis Crisis Center has grown from the vision of a few caring doctors to a full-service, 24/7 lifeline for anyone in distress.  Trained volunteers, using empathetic listening and crisis intervention, help callers with immediate problems and link them to the resources they need to cope and overcome.  As a United Way agency and partner of the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, their services are free of cost, 100 percent secure, and totally confidential.

Their 24/7 lifeline, 901-CRISIS-7 (901-274-7477), is the first place people can turn when things seem out of control.  Having someone at the other end of the line, who is listening compassionately without judging, while talking through the hurt to find a solution literally helps make the difference between life and death.  The MCC received over 17,000 calls last year with approximately 1,200 related to suicide.  Typical calls can include a wide range of issues, such as alcohol and drug abuse, domestic violence, depression, sexual assault, relationship issues, bullying, and suicidal thoughts.

The Memphis Crisis Center also administers the Call4Kids Hotline and partners with Crimestoppers on the SeniorBSafe Line.  Both programs can be accessed through 901 CRISIS-7.  Call4Kids handles calls where a child or teenager’s safety is at-risk.  SeniorBSafe is for seniors or others who feel unsafe in their neighborhoods or suspect illegal activity.  For those needing information about living with HIV/AIDS, the agency operates 1-877-HIV-KNOW.

They are the local affiliate of the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (1-800-273-TALK).  Along with its crisis services, the Memphis Crisis Center offers free suicide awareness and prevention workshops to community groups and schools.

They have a full training program for those interested in volunteering and it is a wonderful opportunity to give back.   It is powerful to know you could possibly help a senior, protect a child, and save a life! Learn more at www.MemphisCrisisCenter.org.
