Nashville Radio Show: CreatiVets

CreatiVets is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to provide disabled veterans with the opportunity to use art, music and creative writing to address the psychological and emotional needs that arise from service-related trauma. Their goal is to provide artistic resources and accessible spaces to veterans in order to foster self-expression, enhance coping skills, manage stress, and strengthen their sense of self through the healing power of music, writing and visual art.

CreatiVets is in its 5th year providing combat veterans struggling with post-traumatic stress and traumatic brain injury with opportunities to use art, music, and creative writing to heal their unseen wounds of war. Their goal is to empower veterans with tools they can use for the rest of their lives and enable them to see their own capacity for success in an arena outside the battlefield.

According to the Department of Defense, one in five veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars are diagnosed with PTS - over 300,000 veterans by the end of 2012. The social and economic costs of PTS are immense, and the Department of Veteran Affairs reported in a February 2013 study that the veteran suicide rate in the United States is 22 suicides per day, or one every 65 minutes. Veterans now account for 20% of suicides in the United States.
