Radio Show: Shelby County Education Foundation

The Shelby County Education Foundation is a nonprofit (501(c)(3))-organization dedicated to supporting the Public schools in Shelby County (Tennessee) Schools. Such support has manifested itself in recent years in fundraising to fully or partially underwrite a number of special programs – including a lecture series, student art contests, a scholarship program, an alumni recognition event, small grants for unique projects and for innovative teaching techniques across a wide spectrum of disciplines.

Upcoming event: January 18 from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Knowledge Tree Store at 5000 Summer Avenue.

Looking for 100 volunteers to help sort and package personal hygiene products for needy students in Shelby County.

Volunteers will package 5,000 shampoos, deodorants, soap, toothbrushes, tooth paste, dental floss and feminine hygiene products into bags to be delivered to local schools.

Studies have shown that girls often are absent from school on days of their periods because they do not have sanitary products at home. Boys also have indicated they are often embarrassed to go to school without having proper hygiene products. Volunteers will place items into individual Kroger bags. We received a grant to do this project from United Health and Kroger stores.

We also plan to take applications for teacher classroom grants next month. Teachers complete a simple form asking for funds to purchase items to enhance their classrooms. Unfortunately, teachers often purchase supplies for their classrooms from their own personal funds. Some of the examples of projects we have funded in the past include: Robotics software, school gardens, art projects, special events and speakers, STEM related projects, etc.
